about the calendar project :
I desire simplicity. Yet I am surrounded by complexity.
I cast my net, attempting to capture something meaningful from the endless and repeating tide. Meanwhile, TIME sails past me on an impatient wind.
The
calendar project (2005-2007) began simply as a studio exercise
determined, in part, by the limitations of a very small attic work
space and complicated by a desire to make large paintings. My
goal was to create one study each day to loosen my hand and mind before
beginning my "real work.” I originally conceived of 100
studies limited in size, 9.5"h x 6.5"w, and restricted in vocabulary to
simple abstracted forms. This studio exercise evolved into a
larger project when I realized the daily studies were actually real
paintings in themselves. After completing over 200, I started to
think in terms of grouping these small paintings. When combined,
they described a journey, a story. Each recorded day built upon
the next, creating a visual diary, and the calendar form emerged.

Beyond
the paintings themselves, a limited edition accordion fold book is
available that encompasses the entire project in one place. It
holds images of the 12
calendar configurations on one side and details from each month on the
reverse, along with some text. It is housed in a slip case, 9 x
1.25
x 1" and covered in a beautiful bronze colored silk cloth. Each
of the 50 copies is printed with archival inks on 100% cotton rag paper, hand bound, signed and numbered.
